Final 4 Picks

March 26, 2012

I picked two of the Final 4 teams  (Kentucky and Kansas).  My other two teams were Florida State and Michigan State.  My championship game pick was Kansas vs Michigan State with MSU winning it all.

If I were to make new picks now, I would take Kentucky.  But who wouldn’t?  The Cats (36-2) have looked pretty much unbeatable.  Against Baylor, they just turned it on and ran the Bears out of the gym after Baylor took an early 10-5 lead.  Kentucky scored the next 16 points.  Game over.  The Wildcats just have too many athletes who can shoot it from long distance and pound it inside.  But I think their game versus Louisville could be very interesting given it’s an instate rival.  It will also be the 1st time two teams from the same state meet in the Final Four since Cincinnati beat Ohio State 71-59 in the 1962 Championship Game.

The Cardinals (30-9) are the “Cinderella” as the #4 seed.  Louisville might have played the most clutch of anyone of the 4 teams playing in New Orleans.  They absolutely shut down Michigan State offensively to make it to the Elite 8.  Then to follow it up, rallied from a double digit deficit against Florida in the final minutes to beat the Gators.

The Kansas Jayhawks (31-6) will be making their 2nd trip to the Final 4 under Head Coach Bill Self.  KU took “survive and advance” to the limit, edging out both Purdue 63-60 and NC State 60-57 before running away in the final moments against North Carolina.  Defense has been huge for the Jayhawks.

Ohio State (31-7)  is back to the Final 4 for the first time since losing to Florida in the 2007 Title Game.  The Buckeyes had lost in the Sweet 16 round their previous two trips to the NCAA’s.

Final 4 picks:

Kentucky 83, Louisville 74

Kansas 86, Ohio State 80

Title Game:

Kentucky 91, Kansas 83

Good job Des Moines.  Attendance figures are in from the regional semi-finals of the NCAA Women’s Tournament (courtesy of the DM Register):

  1. Agree for the most part…still wouldn’t count out Ohio State with a healthy Jared Sullinger who’s playing very well

  2. Agreed. Ohio State could very well beat KU. But I took the Jayhawks since I originally picked them to the championship game.
