Grand View at Drake-TONIGHT

August 30, 2012

For the 3rd time, Grand View will travel across town to meet the Drake Bulldogs in the battle of bragging rights for Des Moines.  Drake is 2-0 in the series with wins in 2009 (22-0) and 2011 (28-21 OT).

Last year’s contest was very entertaining, yet disappointing for the Vikings of Grand View who let a win slip from their grasp.  Grand View led 21-14 with 8 seconds remaining before Bulldogs QB Mike Piatkowski threw a 10 yard scoring strike to Nathan Paddock to send the game into overtime.  Drake would win on Piatkowski’s 3rd TD pass of the night, an 11 yarder to Drew Blackmon.  The loss for GV spoiled the trifeca of TD passes made by Vikings QB Greg Charles to Darin Davis.

Drake is coming off a Pioneer Football League Title in 2011, while Grand View won their first ever Mid-States Football Association Midwest Conference Championship last season, which also sent them to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time.

Grand View Head Coach Mike Woodley mentioned this week how appreciative he is to Coach Chris Creighton and Drake for putting the Vikings on the schedule.  It makes sense for these two teams to play every year.  I hope it continues for the forseeable future.

As the case anytime David plays Goliath; the key for GV is to stay in the game early, if not take a lead like they did last year.  The longer the Vikings are in the game, the better it is for them and the more pressure mounts on the Bulldogs.  But if Drake comes out and takes a two score lead without much restraint, then it could be a long night for the men from Grand View.  Also The Vikings will not win by turning the ball over as much as they did last week vs Graceland.

I’ll be calling the game with former Grand View student Jon Kelly tonight starting at 7:00 (Central).  Here’s the link, hope you can tune in:  http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/grandview.portal#
